A Special Tribute on His Death Anniversary

Rewari. Whenever the name of Dara Singh Randhawa is mentioned, eyes fill with respect and admiration. A legendary wrestler, iconic actor, and former Member of Parliament, Dara Singh was born on November 19, 1928, in Dharmuchak village, Punjab. He raised India’s flag high across the globe with his strength and talent. But few people know that he also shared a special emotional bond with Rewari, Haryana — a bond that became stronger through his close friendship with renowned social worker and industrialist Late Sushil Kumar Swami.

Called Rewari His “Second Home”

According to Amit Swami, son of Late Sushil Kumar Swami. President Youngmen’s Association of India, the friendship between his father and Dara Singh began in the 1970s. It blossomed into a lifelong connection. Dara Singh considered Rewari an integral part of his life and visited often, staying with warmth and affection.

A Heartwarming Memory with Children

On one occasion, students from Amit Swami’s primary school expressed their wish to meet Dara Singh on his birthday. He not only agreed to meet them but brought gajar ka halwa (carrot pudding) and boxes of dry fruits for the children. When young Amit said the children preferred toffees and chocolates, Dara Singh smiled and replied, “No son, eat dry fruits — that will make you a wrestler.”

Loved Traditional Haryanvi Cuisine

During his visits to Rewari, Dara Singh would often dine at the Swami family home. He had a special fondness for makki ki roti, sarson ka saag, desi ghee, and fresh green vegetables. He never needed a formal invitation — one phone call from Swami Ji, and Dara Singh would arrive with joy.

The Iconic Hanuman of “Ramayan”

Dara Singh’s portrayal of Lord Hanuman in Ramanand Sagar’s television series Ramayan during the 1980s was so powerful that people began calling him the “living Hanuman.” He participated in many religious events in Rewari in this role, and devotees touched his feet with reverence.

Raised Social Issues as a Rajya Sabha MP

From 2003 to 2009, Dara Singh served as a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Parliament). He actively voiced concerns related to sports, rural development, and youth welfare. His life was a true example of dedication to the nation, society, and culture. Though he passed away on July 12, 2012, he lives on in the hearts of millions.

A Role Model for the Youth

At the Rewari Open Wrestling Championship 1999, where he was the chief guest, Dara Singh inspired young athletes by saying, “If I can become a world champion coming from a village, why can’t you?” This message still echoes in the hearts of Rewari’s youth.

Amit Swami’s Global Recognition and Esteemed Associations

India’s WWE World Heavyweight Champion and international film actor Dalip Singh Rana (The Great Khali) shares a close friendship with Amit Swami. It was on Amit’s recommendation that the City Police Station Road near Rewari Railway Station was officially named The Great Khali Road — a token of honor for his dear friend.

In a historic moment in 1999, six-time Mr. Olympia and global bodybuilding icon Dorian Yates visited Rewari with his wife and friends — the first ever Mr. Olympia winner to visit any South Asian country. His trip, linked with charity work through his bond with Amit Swami, surprised the entire nation.

In 2008, Datuk Paul Chua, President of the World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Federation and regarded as the father figure of international bodybuilding, made a special visit to Amit Swami’s industry in Bawal during his India tour. He was warmly welcomed and honored.

Dara Singh Still Lives in Rewari’s Memories

To this day, sports lovers, students, and elders in Rewari remember Dara Singh with respect, pride, and deep emotion. His life story remains an inspiring lesson for generations to come — a real-life example of hard work, discipline, and patriotism.
